The Impact of Budgetary Allocations on Teacher Recruitment in Public Secondary Schools: A Study of Nasarawa State (2009-2022).

Abstract

Budgetary allocations play an important role in the educational development process of any country. This study investigated the impact of budgetary allocations on the teacher recruitment in public secondary schools in Nasarawa state, from 2009 to 2022. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. Data were obtained from primary and secondary sources. The primary data was collected using questionnaire and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs). The questionnaire was administered on 364 teachers in both urban and rural public secondary schools in the state. The primary data was analyzed with simple descriptive statistics such as tables and charts. The key informant interviews were conducted for principals of selected schools and other stakeholders in the Ministries of Education and Finance of the state. The secondary sources comprised mainly data obtained from the Nasarawa State Ministries of Education and Finance, Budget and Planning. Simple Linear Regression Model was employed to test the formulated hypothesis. The findings of the study revealed that budgetary allocation had a statistically significant and positive impact on the recruitment of teachers in public secondary schools in the state for the period under review. However, the Nasarawa State Government had not recruited an adequate number of teachers that would drive the development of public secondary schools in the state. The study, therefore, recommended among others that the state government should recruit more qualified teachers, especially those with bachelor’s degrees in science education to achieve the needed development of public secondary education in the state.
